Chapter Thirteen

Lacey pulled up behind the building and stared at the back door for several moments before she shut the engine off and got out. She didn’t want to be here but she had a job to do. As she walked up the stairs she saw an envelope sticking out of the screen door. She frowned, took it, and slid her finger beneath the flap. Inside was a note from Ross that said to see Annie at the café.

“Annie?” she said. “Why?” After reading the note one more time she shrugged. She stuffed the paper into a pocket then made her way around the building and across the street. A bell rang as she pushed open the café door, and Annie appeared almost immediately. A smile broke out on her face when she spotted Lacey. After wiping her hands on her apron, she approached.

“Afternoon, Lacey. How’s it going?”

Lacey slid onto a seat at the counter and returned the woman’s smile. “All right I guess.”

“Want a cup of coffee?”

“No, but a cup of tea would be nice.”

Annie grinned and nodded, red curls dancing. “You got it.”

Lacey watched as Annie bustled around, gathering one of those little silver teapots, a cup and saucer, and a tea bag. Glancing around the café, Lacey nodded and smiled at several people, then turned her attention back to the vivacious redhead as she put her tea on the counter. “Thanks, Annie.”

Annie shook her head and leaned against the counter. “No problem. Now what brings you here? You don’t usually come into town this time of day.”

Lacey stopped in mid-drink. “Ross left me a note telling me to come see you. I have some book work to do, and I thought he would be in the bar, but he’s not.”

“Oh.” Annie’s eyes widened and she searched her pockets. Finally, she pulled out a key and handed it to Lacey. “I forgot. It’s a key to the bar. Ross had to run some errands, and he said to give this to you when you came by.”

Lacey looked at the key for a moment then slipped it into her pocket. “Thanks, Annie.” Part of her was relieved that the inevitable face-to-face with Ross had been postponed, while another part of her just wanted it over with.

The cook tossed a plate underneath the warmer lights and barked something unintelligible in their direction. Annie glanced at him in annoyance then turned back to her. “Don’t mention it. Hey, are you okay? You look...tired.” The cook growled again and Annie frowned. “Don’t go anywhere. I’ll be right back.”

As the vivacious woman bustled off with the plate of food, Lacey thought about ducking out but decided against it. The last thing she wanted to do was alienate any of the friends she had in Cooper’s Ridge. She’d already done a bang up job with Ross, so she stayed put.

After Annie deposited the plate, she checked on the other customers in the café then made her way back to where Lacey sat. Instead of standing behind the counter she came around and sat down next to her, her eyes filled with concern.
